This week we discussed the Ethics Committee. We learned who is on an ethics committee and what role they play in business.
Our instructor asked us to discuss and come up with the greatest leader of all time. Somehow we came up with Hitler. Let me explain this... Hitler was able to convince a whole country of people to follow him. They thought he was doing what was in their best interest and he got what he wanted. Now let me clarify that none of us think of him as a great person, just a successful leader. Personally, I wouldn't have opted to pick Hitler because no matter how successful he was, there was nothing "good" about him.
Now this is more like it!!!!! |
Another topic was the movie, "My Sister's Keeper". We discussed the ethics behind this movie and how an Ethics Committee would have been helpful in their circumstances. Again, this was not a favorite for me. I really didn't like the movie. There was just too much emotion tied up in the ethical components of this movie.
We discussed other ethical scenario's as a class. We looked at how they were or were not ethical and what an ethics committee could do to help the situation.
I think the biggest take home for me this week was in understanding other's opinions and looking outside of my own box to see what would be the bet fit for the problem. Every opinion and every angle of a problem needs to be looked at in order to resolve a situation ethically.
It is still my goal to view others objectively and see a patient or situation from all sides of the coin before I move forward. What is best for the patient may not be what my opinion states, it may come from other viewpoint altogether.
